2026 Honda Prelude US model hybrid grand touring sports coupe with Civic Type R suspension hardware
After more than two decades away, the Prelude returns to the U.S. as a hybrid grand touring coupe blending Civic Type R chassis hardware with Honda’s new S+ Shift driver-engagement system 🚗

If you haven’t already heard. The Honda Prelude, first announced back in 2023 at the Japan Mobility Show as a concept, was launched in Japan last October, and a month later, it was announced for the U.S. market. Folks, this is the 2026 Honda Prelude, and it is available to anyone willing to pay the price. But more on that in a bit. The last Prelude sold was in 2001, concluding a 23-year run with 5 generations under its belt. That said, the return of the Prelude has a special place in the heart of JDM enthusiasts.

Now it is back. Not as a turbocharged tire-shredder—not that it was ever a turbocharged car before. Not as a nostalgia trap. OK. Maybe a little cos it does set the hearts of some JDM fans fluttering… Anyhoo, this car is beyond horsepower and emotion. Honda brought it back as something far more interesting: a hybrid grand touring coupe with Civic Type R hardware hiding underneath.

Yes. That sentence still feels strange to say. And it totally feels like the marketing people asked the engineering team what the selling points were going to be for this lovely ride, and the engineering team looked at the Civic Type R parts lying on the table and went, “Ermmm, it has Civic Type R hardware?” Just kidding. That never happened. But you know where I am going with this. It feels like a fallback strategy in case nostalgia does not sell.

The new Prelude is powered by a two-motor hybrid powertrain paired with chassis components borrowed from the Civic Type R. The system uses an AC Synchronous Permanent-Magnet Electric Drive Motor producing 181 horsepower and 232 lb-ft (314 Nm) of torque, working together with a 1,993 cc (2.0 L) inline-four DOHC engine rated at 141 horsepower and 134 lb-ft (182 Nm). Total system output lands at 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft (314 Nm) of torque.

I know. The math isn’t mathing here. But hear me out. The peak output here is not simply addition. The Prelude’s hybrid system doesn’t add the engine’s 141 hp and the motor’s 181 hp together since their peak outputs occur at different times and cannot be delivered simultaneously. Instead, Honda rates the maximum combined output available at once, which works out to 200 hp total system power. I mean, 200 hp is fair for this car. Nobody’s going to put the Prelude against Dom’s 1970 Dodge Charger R/T. This car is not about ponies or how fast it goes. It is the emotion.

Helping deliver that emotion is something new called Honda S+ Shift. It simulates gear changes in what is technically a transmission-less hybrid setup, complete with rev-matched downshift behavior and paddle-shift interaction. In other words, Honda built fake shifting into an electrified drivetrain and somehow made that sound like a good thing. Honestly, it kind of is.

Underneath, things get serious. The Prelude uses dual-axis strut front suspension, adaptive dampers, wide tracks, and Brembo four-piston front calipers lifted straight from the Civic Type R playbook. The brakes alone use 13.8-inch (351 mm) front rotors and 12.0-inch (305 mm) rear rotors. That is not decorative engineering.

Drive modes include Comfort, GT, Sport, and Individual, each adjusting steering weight, suspension response, engine sound profile, and gauge layout. Yes, even the instrument cluster gets into character depending on the mood.

Visually, the coupe keeps things clean and low with a sharp nose, flared fenders, a wide stance, and a proper double-bubble roof that quietly signals Honda designers were paying attention to the old playbook. Flush door handles and laser-brazed roof seams help keep the surfaces tidy, while blue accents on the fascias and Brembo calipers remind you this is not just another hybrid commuter.

Inside, Honda went with leather-trimmed sport seats featuring perforated houndstooth inserts, integrated head restraints, and asymmetrical bolstering. The driver gets tighter support. The passenger gets comfort. Equality, but with priorities.

Tech includes a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9-inch HD touchscreen with Google built in, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, wireless charging, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and an 8-speaker Bose sound system tuned specifically for the cabin. The coupe also keeps its practical side alive with 2+2 seating and 60/40 split fold-down rear seats accessible through a liftback hatch that can swallow weekend luggage or golf bags without drama.

Safety equipment is equally comprehensive, with the full Honda Sensing suite standard along with Blind Spot Information, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Collision Mitigation Braking, and Post-Collision Braking.

All told, the 2026 Prelude feels less like a revival and more like Honda quietly redefining what a modern sporty coupe can be in a hybrid era. Not louder. Not faster. Just smarter and still fun where it counts.

The 2026 Honda Prelude arrives at dealerships nationwide later this fall with pricing starting from US$42,000.
