When a product becomes an extension of our lives, things can get, well, a little mundane. Every year, when a successor is announced, we go, “Yay, a new model,” and then move on. In other words, there is not much excitement going on.
It looks like Huawei understands this and is constantly exploring beyond the status quo. Its latest exploration has led to an entirely new smartphone form factor. Huawei recently previewed the world’s first “wide-body” phone, the Huawei Pura X View [CH].
The Pura X View ditches the typical smartphone’s 19.5:9-to-20:9 aspect ratio in favor of a chubby 16:9.5 format. I cannot say whether it will be useful, but the “freshness” sure makes it an exciting gadget—much like the Pura X Max did.
It is worth noting that these reimaginings of the smartphone form factor, including foldables, are not done for novelty’s sake but are based on practicality. Huawei’s willingness to think outside the box and relook at how we use phones has resulted in this unusual form factor.
However, the device has not been officially unveiled. It has only been partially revealed, with some reviewers already getting a first look, though they are not allowed to discuss the specifications. We try not to cover teasers, but damn, this device really deserves a first look.
For now, we understand that the Huawei Pura X View has a 6.39-inch OLED panel with a resolution of 2,232 x 1,320 pixels. It is a super-bright display with a peak brightness of 6,500 nits and support for 2,160 Hz PWM dimming. It also boasts an impressive screen-to-body ratio of 96.1%, thanks to super-narrow bezels measuring just 1.05 mm all around.
We also know that the device is thin and light, and boasts ultra-long battery life. We are talking about a weight as low as 201 g (7.1 oz) and a thickness of just 6.68 mm (0.26 in). Despite this ridiculous thinness, it packs a 7,000 mAh battery.
The device will be the first to ship with HarmonyOS 7 and offers 12 GB of RAM paired with 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB of storage. That is what we know so far.
Not going to lie, I was excited for a moment, thinking it had been announced when I saw the listing on Huawei’s Chinese consumer website. Alas, it has not. Pricing has yet to be disclosed, and the Huawei Pura X View is set to be announced in September.
Eager fans in China can already reserve one [CH], though they will need a rather brave wallet to do so since the price remains unknown.
