i got to admit that i was totally captivated by CONVAR customizable range of external harddrives when i first laid eyes on it. for tech gadgets, being uniquely different is something that i’m always on the look-out for and this CONVAR item, dubbed ByteSpotter, definitely has its place on my list. ok, this is an external harddrive. so what’s so special about it? what makes this piece of gadget unique is that it lets you see the inner working of the harddrive via a transparent round window on the harddrive top cover and the top, bottom and the ventilation grille of the enclosure is customizable.
by default there are three designs for the top cover – “MOHAWK”, which has dark orange text on turquoise (lightly translucent) background, “RED BARON”, which has dark red text on cream white background and “SNOWITE”, which is snow white in color. all three covers are of white glass and hand varnished. buyer have a choice of three bottom covers, namely, oiled black walnut wood, oiled cherry tree wood or grey iron metal. ventilation grille is also customizable with a selection of stainless steel in either varnished black or uncoated brushed steel. CONVAR also offers customization of the top cover with your own logo in a small series, and that, of course, is price on application.
CONVAR did not state which brand of harddrive it uses for its ByteSpotter external harddrives but it offers the following technical specifications:

the ByteSpotter External Harddrive costs €348 (about US$486) which is pretty expensive, considering you could buy a netbook with the same amount but then again, that’s the price of being uniquely different.
