If you haven’t already heard, DJI is taking a dip into the 360 camera game, too. The Chinese drone maker best known for making, well, imaging drones now not only has regular GoPro-style action cameras, it has a 360-degree camera too. And DJI ain’t waltzing in like a regular dude-next-door with yet another 360-degree camera; it is entering the 360 market in a very high-definition way: 8K/50fps. How’s that for a start?
The DJI Osmo 360 marks the brand’s foray into the still-small-but-surely-growing panoramic action cam scene, taking on established players like Insta360. As mentioned, DJI doesn’t toe-tip into the market. It’s coming in without restraint.
The new Osmo 360 touts an industry-first square 1-inch HDR image sensor with massive 2.4 μm pixels, up to 120 MP 360° photos, and the requisite, almost-sorcery-like invisible selfie stick effect—without the need for editing. Other features include DJI’s proven RockSteady stabilization (now at version 3.0), as well as HorizonSteady stabilization technology. And then there’s gesture and voice control, plus GyroFrame and intelligent tracking.
Oh, did I also mention that it does slow-mo 4K/100fps video as well? Well, that’s an inflation we can accept!
The device boasts a whopping 105 GB of built-in storage and is outfitted with a battery good for up to 100 minutes of 8K recording. Understanding that users may not want or need a 360° view every single time, this newest kid in the small 360 camera block also lets you use it as a 5K/60fps action cam with a 155–170° field of view, and boasts a runtime of 100–280 minutes with the optional battery grip.
All this is packed into a compact, lightweight package of just 183 g (around an average smartphone’s weight) that can withstand extreme conditions—like recording over 1.5 hours in freezing temps as low as -20°C (-4°F).
If you’re down, well, then be prepared to splurge, because this little big guy does not come cheap. Expect to shell out at least US$549.99 for a basic setup.
