Dream Recorder by Modem Works

Ever had a dream, woke up feeling so overwhelmed and surreal that you wish you could replay the dream just to have a better look? Well, if you have this desire—like most people do—you’re in luck. Modem Works has collaborated with a bunch of talented people to develop an open-source dream recorder.

Dream Recorder by Modem Works

Aptly called, well, Dream Recorder, this bedside device is designed to capture your dreams and turn them into short cinematic reels, allowing you to relive your dreams (which hopefully are sweet, not nightmarish!).

It is a standalone device that works without a phone or app. Leveraging EEG and fMRI technology, the device monitors your brainwave patterns during REM sleep. These patterns represent visual and auditory signals from your subconscious mind and are then interpreted by AI. The signals are translated into surreal video clips through diffusion models and generative AI, in the aesthetic of your choice. So I guess if it’s a bad dream, you don’t have to make it all dark and gloomy? Maybe? I don’t know. I’m just guessing.

Apparently, Dream Recorder can produce surreal yet precise dream visualizations. Now, I’m curious. Is it actually your dream, or just visuals created by AI based on what it was trained on? I mean, it makes a huge difference—because if there are bad thoughts when your mind is off-duty, they may not be interpreted at all. Again, I’m just curious.

The good news is that this is totally accessible tech. All you have to do is download the open-source code, pick up off-the-shelf hardware components, 3D print the shell (or ask someone else to do it if you don’t have a 3D printer), and assemble it all together. Modem Works promises there will be no soldering involved.
