I’m sure most people are familiar with flat-head socket cap screws—aka hex screws. You know, those screws that require an Allen key to drive in or remove. You probably think nothing of them, but if that exposed hex hole bugs you, or if your project demands a sleeker finish without unsightly cutouts, then you’ll want to check out Flush Fasteners.

Originally conceived for cleanrooms and critical containment environments—where recessed screws pose contamination risks—Flush Fasteners are designed to sit perfectly flush with surfaces. The result is a clean, streamlined look that’s as much about aesthetics as it is about aerodynamics.

Thanks to an innovative plunger mechanism, these screws don’t require a permanent tool cutout. Instead, a retractable plunger (yes, in something that tiny!) allows you to use an Allen key to install or remove the screw, then springs back to restore a smooth surface with no visual interruption. Each one is crafted from 316 medical-grade stainless steel, offering excellent strength and corrosion resistance.

While ideal for cleanrooms and medical applications, Flush Fasteners are just as useful in design-conscious products—or even interior decor—if you don’t mind paying US$4.50 a pop or US$35 for a pack of 10. They’re available in both imperial and metric sizes with a variety of thread pitches and lengths. As a bonus, these fasteners meet—and often exceed—the stringent standards of medical-grade hardware.

The Flush Fasteners aren’t the only flush fastener in the market. There are also the PIKA Screws. These are unique types of hidden slot screws designed for furniture and architectural applications. They also have a concealed slot that is only revealed when the spring-loaded central plunger is depressed, thus allowing screwing and unscrewing.

Like the Flush Fasteners, the surface of the head appears seamless—unbroken by default. The PIKA line offers a more comprehensive solution, especially for structural applications. It has a machine thread and a leg screw that screws into the structure, before topping up with the PIKA screw for the seamless look. You can check out this video for the demo. Very impressive and super cool.

PIKA offers a more complete flush fastener solution, but the only downside is that it requires a special tool to screw/unscrew. The PIKA screws, tools, and accessories start at US$5.40. The 5/16”-18 PIKA screw 4-pack costs a cool 30 dollars, btw. But god damn it, they look fantastic!
