Pop culture icon collaborations with dive watches now make more sense with the Spinnaker DoodleBob Limited Edition capsule. Because, you know, deep sea. But this time, SpongeBob SquarePants’ appearance on Spinnaker dive watches is not quite as anyone remembers it.
As the product name suggests, it is the doodle version of the resident of Bikini Bottom, the mischievous DoodleBob from the episode Frankendoodle, that has called the watch dial home.
All told, three Spinnaker watches have been turned into homes for DoodleBob, and they are:
- Hull California Automatic — Patty Parade
- Fleuss Automatic — Ripped Reality
- Croft Mid-Size Automatic — Minute Sketch
The chaotic version of SpongeBob is as doodly as it can be on the dial, but I think the real magic is when it glows in the dark—thanks to Swiss Super-LumiNova. When the lights dim, the real menace becomes even more prominent.
Even more interesting is that the Spinnaker SpongeBob SquarePants DoodleBob Limited Edition capsule has a blind-box element to it. Hidden among the production run are six rare watches per variant that have a secret UV-activated graffiti on the dial. It is invisible to the naked eye, but shine an ultraviolet light on it, and it becomes visible.
The tale of SpongeBob SquarePants’ DoodleBob does not end there. On the Croft and the Fleuss, the minute hand is the magical pencil, with the Croft version in color and the Fleuss in monochrome. The Hull California does not have a pencil for a hand; instead, the pencil is in DoodleBob’s hands.
Rounding out the SpongeBob SquarePants DoodleBob theme is Spinnaker’s branding in SpongeBob SquarePants’ typeface. Each timepiece also comes in beautiful SpongeBob-themed packaging complete with a collector’s card.
Beyond the DoodleBob treatment, these watches are the Spinnakers you have known and loved. This means features like a stainless steel case, Japanese automatic three-hand movement (with date for the Croft and Hull California), water resistance up to 15 ATM (10 ATM for the Hull California), a unidirectional rotating bezel (fixed bezel for the Hull California), an anti-reflection-coated sapphire lens, a screw-down crown, and a stainless steel bracelet with an extra silicone strap.
At the time of this posting, the Croft Mid-Size Automatic – SpongeBob SquarePants DoodleBob Limited Edition, which sold for US$425 and was limited to 600 pieces, is sold out. However, the Hull California Automatic – SpongeBob SquarePants DoodleBob Limited Edition, which sells for US$425 and has 500 pieces to go around, and the US$525 Fleuss Automatic – SpongeBob SquarePants DoodleBob Limited Edition, which has an edition size of 600, are still available.
