URWERK UR-120 Space Black Luxury Watch

URWERK’s timepieces are proof that you don’t need a touchscreen to look and feel sci-fi. The URWERK UR-110 is one such timepiece that fully spells sci-fi without saying that it is sci-fi. The UR-120 is an evolution of the watchmaker’s signature wandering hours first adopted in the UR-110. Speaking of the UR-120, it has a new edition known as the URWERK UR-120 Space Black.

So what was the evolution we were talking about? Well, instead of a cube that rotates to reveal the new hour, the UR-120 features a new revolving satellite complication that has a never seen before split open digital hour satellite mounted on planetary gears.

The hour satellite morphs into the form of a V-shaped open hand much like the iconic Vulcan “Live long and prosper” greeting we saw in Star Trek. This is also why the UR-120 is also known as Spock since he was the most recognizable Vulcan in the Star Trek universe.

This time indication rotates on its own axis, split open to unveil its secrets smoothly. It almost feels like I have witnessed some ancient contraption coming to life straight out of an Indiana Jones movie.

This sci-fi-ish watch’s new edition features a new colorway that pairs a sandblasted titanium case with a stainless steel bezel and is then treated with black DLC and silicon coating. The deep, space-black treatment is accented by neon yellow accents on the minute track, and on the splitting cubes.

Speaking of the dial, the indexes feature hand-applied, SuperLuminova that enables clear, low-light time reading. Rounding up the design is a curved sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective treatment and a calf-leather strap with an embossed Cordura pattern.

Clockwork is powered by calibre UR-20.01, featuring an in-house developed satellite construction mounted on a reliable base movement, a Zenith Elite automatic calibre, with a propeller-shape Windfänger on the rotor to moderate the winding rate.

The watch offers 48 hours of power reserve and uses a variety of materials to realize the movement, including Beryllium-copper, grey PVD brass, black PVD and black rhodium, and more. The timepiece has been pressure-tested to 3 ATM (30 meters/100 feet).

The new URWERK UR-120 Space Black is available alongside the existing titanium edition for 110,000 CHF which works out to be around US$122,880 according to the current going rate.
