25 years ago, Subaru Impreza shot to fame when Prodrive debuted the two-door Impreza World Rally Car (WRC). The following year, Subaru celebrated its success in the WRC with the Subaru Impreza 22B, inspired by the 2-door WRC.
Only 424 right-hand-drive examples were built and they were quickly sold out. 25 years after Impreza’s many achievements, Prodrive is offering petrol heads another chance to own one.
But Prodrive isn’t rolling out new 22Bs, obviously. It is really a restomod where the 20-something-year-old car is given a new lease of life, featuring the original two-door Impreza WRX chassis but with reduced weight, a more powerful engine, and improved vehicle dynamics.
Under the hood, is the latest 2.5L flat-four aka 4-cylinder boxer engine with variable cam timing, paired to Garrett performance road turbo with anti-lag, and Akrapovič racing exhaust with active silencer by-pass.
The new engine produces over 400 horsepower (as compared to the claimed 276 HP of the 90s 22B) and turns out an impressive 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque. The power is put to good use on all four wheels through a six-speed X-shift sequential gearbox with helical gears with semi-automatic paddle shift gear change, and AP Racing twin plate clutch, along with active and adjustable electronic center differential and plated LSDs front and rear.
The car now weighs less than 1,200 kilograms (2,646 lbs) – thanks to the extensive use of carbon fiber on areas like the hood, trunk lid, front and rear quarters, roof, front and rear bumper, as well as the Impreza WRC rear spoiler.
Other highlights include AP Racing brakes, 19-inch Bridgestone wheels wrapped Bridgestone Potenza rubbers (235/35/R19), Bilstein two-way adjustable dampers, MoTec widescreen HD multi-page drive display, WRC style fly-off hydraulic handbrake, and more.
Only 25 units of the Prodrive P25 will be produced, each going for a princely sum of £460,000 +VAT (roughly US$555,800).
