Audi Nuvolari Hybrid Hypercar
The R8 may be gone, but Audi is not done building dream machines. The new Nuvolari packs a 1,001 PS hybrid powertrain, active aerodynamics, Formula 1-inspired technology, and enough downforce to make even seasoned supercars nervous.

Audi has not officially called the Nuvolari a successor to the R8, but we all know it is the spiritual successor to the supercar that stopped production in 2024. The silhouette is unmistakably R8-ish. But never mind if it is or it is not because Audi is back with a contender in the supercar category, called Audi Nuvolari. The Nuvolari is Audi’s new halo supercar and the brand’s first production vehicle to combine a high-performance hybrid powertrain with Formula 1-inspired technologies.

Limited to 499 units, it will become the most powerful and fastest production Audi ever built, with deliveries scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027. If you ask me, the car transcends supercar; it really should be a hypercar with a combined 1,001 PS (736 kW) and is capable of a top speed exceeding 350 km/h (217+ mph).

Power is derived from a hybrid system pairing a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 800 hp (588 kW) with three axial-flux electric motors, supported by a 7.3 kWh lithium-ion battery. The result is a 0-100 km/h sprint in 2.6 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 6.8 seconds.

The V8 alone is a monster. It revs all the way to 10,000 rpm and produces 730 Nm (538 lb-ft) of torque. Two electric motors sit at the front axle, delivering torque vectoring and all-wheel-drive capability, while a third motor is positioned between the engine and transmission. Together, they form what Audi calls the next evolution of quattro.

The technology story does not end there. The Nuvolari introduces quattro predictive ride, a system that constantly monitors grip, steering angle, acceleration, yaw rate, and other vehicle dynamics before proactively adjusting torque distribution, braking, and aerodynamics. In other words, the car is always thinking a few steps ahead.

Speaking of aerodynamics, Formula 1’s influence is everywhere. The Nuvolari features an S-duct front end, active aerodynamic elements, and a deployable rear wing complete with a Drag Reduction System (DRS) similar to the one used in Formula 1. In its most aggressive configuration, the aerodynamic package can generate more than 400 kg (882 lb) of downforce.

The structure beneath all of this is equally impressive. Audi combines its latest Audi Space Frame architecture with an extensive carbon-fiber exterior. Nearly every body panel is made from carbon fiber, including complex components produced using Formula 1-style manufacturing techniques. Even the forged center-lock wheels are a first for a production Audi.

Inside, Audi has resisted the temptation to turn the cockpit into a rolling tablet. The interior focuses on driving, with lightweight carbon-fiber seats, anodized aluminum trim, physical controls, and a minimalist layout designed to keep the driver’s attention where it belongs.

Named after legendary Italian racing driver Tazio Nuvolari, the Audi Nuvolari is Audi’s clearest statement yet that electrification does not mean the end of excitement. If this is what comes after the R8, Audi’s future looks very fast indeed.

Let’s be honest. Most of us will never own one of the 499 Audi Nuvolaris. In fact, most of us probably have a better chance of seeing one in a YouTube review than in our own driveway. Fortunately, admiration remains free. So if you would like to learn more about Audi’s partially electrified 1,001 PS hypercar, you know where to click.
