ASUS has gaming and computing covered, but its catalog also includes medical devices, audio-visual products, smartphones, air purifiers, and even robots. Recently, it revealed something nobody expected or was prepared for: an intelligent bike booster.
The ASUS Oxiis E250G1 Intelligent Bike Booster, as it is called, is described as a universal friction-drive motor system that transforms a conventional bicycle into more than a pedal-assist bike; it turns it into a smart e-bike.
Mounted to the seat post, its motorized roller presses against the rear tire to assist without interfering with the bicycle’s gears or brakes. Adaptive Boost Technology detects inclines and automatically lends your legs some electronic encouragement. Riders can also choose Eco, Normal, or Sport modes using a button on the unit or the ASUS Oxiis app for Android and iOS.
The motor delivers 250 W continuously and peaks at 500 W, supporting speeds up to 32 km/h (20 mph), or 25 km/h (15.5 mph) where regulations demand it. Its removable 158.4 Wh battery provides up to 50 km (31 miles) of range in Eco mode and recharges in two hours using 100 W USB-C PD.
Other highlights include a wireless cadence sensor, automatic brake-detecting taillight, anti-slip tire contact system, aluminum construction, and IPX4 splash resistance. The entire unit weighs 3.7 kg (8.2 lbs) and measures 400 x 84 x 128 mm (15.7 x 3.3 x 5 inches).
Compatibility covers 16- to 29-inch wheels, 700C wheels, tires up to 60 mm wide, and most city, road, gravel, folding, hybrid, and hardtail mountain bikes. Full-suspension bicycles, carbon-fiber seat posts, and heavily knobby tires need not apply. It is not “universal”, but TBH, if you have those non-applicable bikes, then you probably aren’t looking for assistance to pedal.
