Amid the excitement over a genuinely new Apple product for the first time in a long while, we almost forgot there are also the yearly iPhone updates. Perhaps anticipating that the sea of excitement surrounding Apple’s first foldable might drown out its “lesser” models, Apple revealed only the iPhone 18 Pro series. The regular 18 and the second Air will have to wait.
The headline upgrade is the new 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with variable aperture—a first for the iPhone. Six laser-cut blades automatically adjust the aperture to control lighting and depth of field, while serious photographers can manually choose from four aperture settings. Pro Controls also puts shutter speed, white balance, and a histogram within easy reach. Apple has apparently decided that the Camera app could use a few more buttons to intimidate casual users.
The main camera also gains a new sensor and computational imaging pipeline for sharper details and better low-light performance. Cinematic effects can now be applied after recording at up to 60 fps, while Time-lapse supports 4K Dolby Vision HDR. Apple Reference Image can even create a signed, unalterable version of a photograph for checking whether it has been edited—a useful feature in an age when every suspicious image is immediately blamed on AI.
Power comes from the 2-nanometer A20 Pro, featuring a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU, and dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple claims up to 40 percent faster graphics and twice the AI processing power of the A19 Pro. A next-generation vapor chamber with three times more surface area also delivers up to 40 percent better sustained performance, giving all that silicon somewhere to send its fever.
The Dynamic Island is smaller and can display three Live Activities simultaneously. Meanwhile, iOS 27 brings Siri AI, onscreen awareness, personal-context understanding, photorealistic Image Playground creations, and AI-assisted photo tools.
Battery life reaches up to 36 hours of video playback on the eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max. Both can reach 50 percent charge in around 15 minutes. You also get Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread, and Apple’s new C2 cellular modem.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at US$1,199, while the Pro Max starts at US$1,299. Both come in Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy, with storage ranging from 256GB to 2TB. Pre-orders open September 12, 2026, ahead of availability on September 18.
