70th Miss Universe competition winner Miss Harnaaz Sandhu gave a perfect message to climate change skeptics. Fast forward to the 71st Miss Universe (which is technically Miss Universe 2022 because the 2022 competition was canceled), Miss Universe Thailand, Anna Sueangam-iam, drew audiences’ attention to sustainability with her gown during the evening gown segment.
Ms. Anna Sueangam-iam wore a stunning evening dress made out of beverage can pull tabs as an ode to her parents. Anna’s father is a garbage collector and her mum is a street sweeper. As you can imagine, childhood for Anna was pretty rough as was constantly surrounded by garbage and recyclables.
Anyhoo, back to the dress… the dress may be made of pull tabs but the upcycled dress, which was designed by Thailand-based fashion house Manirat and aptly called Hidden Precious Diamond Dress, looks absolutely luxurious – thanks in part to the Swarovski crystals. Because, let’s face it, while a dress made out of pull tabs made quite an impactful statement, aluminum pull tabs aren’t going to shine as much or feel as luxurious for a prestigious event like the Miss Universe and hence the Swarovski crystals.
Unfortunately for Anna, she did not make it to the Top 16. However, she was awarded the Social Impact Award. The winner of the 71st Miss Universe is Miss USA, Ms. R’Bonney Gabriel. The 71st Miss Universe Competition was held in New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, New Orleans, Louisiana, on January 14, 2023.
In related news, the 71st Miss Universe is the first Miss Universe organized under the new owner JKN Global Group. The Thailand-based media and content company acquired the Miss Universe organization from IMG last October.
