Fans of Godzilla, Ultraman, and Kamen Rider probably never imagined that their favorite franchise would get the Shin spin by the creator of the Neon Genesis Evangelion series/Evangelion films, Hideaki Anno. For those who aren’t aware, the Anno-reimagining is not limited to the three definitive Japanese pop culture icons; Mobile Suit Gundam wasn’t spared.

We are, of course, talking about the Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, a featured film that is essentially a theatrical cut of the opening part of the new Gundam series. Long story short, the GQuuuuuuX is like the Transformers Shattered Glass equivalent, where Zeon won the One Year War instead of the Earth Federation. Anyhoo, the film from this collaboration between Sunrise and Studio Khara has been released on 4K ULTRA HD Blu-ray + Blu-ray and DVD by Bandai Namco Filmworks.
Originally released in Japanese theaters in January 2025 ahead of the TV anime broadcast, GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- re-edited early episodes of the series into a cinematic experience. The story follows high school student Amate Yuzuriha, who becomes involved in illegal mobile suit duels known as Clan Battles after encountering a mysterious girl named Nyaan. Things escalate further when a mysterious Gundam and its pilot, Shuji, enter the picture.
The premium home release includes a newly written novel titled The 17th Bunch Incident by series composer and writer Yoji Enokido, a 36-page special booklet, and a bonus Blu-ray packed with trailers, promotional reels, stage greetings, and the “special footage” later added to theatrical screenings.

Fans purchasing through Bandai Namco’s A-on Store can also get a special archive book compiling the theater-exclusive admission gifts distributed during the movie’s theatrical run. Meanwhile, first-print buyers at participating retailers will receive a mini autograph-board-style illustration card featuring newly drawn artwork.
The project itself is notable for bringing together Studio Khara—the studio behind Evangelion—and Sunrise for a new Gundam universe directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki, with music contributions including Kenshi Yonezu’s theme song “Plazma.”
The Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- 4K ULTRA HD Blu-ray + Blu-ray and DVD retails for 10,780 yen (tax included) and 3,850 yen (tax included) in Japan. Details of the 4K ULTRA HD Blu-ray + Blu-ray and the DVD version can be found here [JP].
