Last month, Motorola launched a new generation of edge family, the edge 50 series. The April 16 announcement has three models: Motorola edge 50 ultra, Motorola edge 50 pro, and Motorola edge 50 fusion. Not surprisingly, they are marketed as AI devices, powered by moto AI. But that’s not what had my attention. It was the Pantone Validated Camera And Display.
With the launch of the Motorola edge 50 series, Motorola now stakes claims as having the world’s smartphones to feature Pantone Validated camera and display. Since 2022, Motorola has incorporated Pantone across its phones but with the new edge series, Motorola has gone beyond color and finish selection; it is pulling Pantone’s expertise into the device display and camera tuning with Pantone Validated and Pantone SkinTone Validated.
These are patent-pending technology programs that test a manufacturer’s device to ensure authentic Pantone colors and skin tones which are essential for content creators, photographers, and designers. However, the new Pantone’s display and camera assessments are available only on the edge 50 ultra and edge 50 pro.
The other thing that caught my eye is the new design. The edge series’ seamless integration of the camera module with the back cover has evolved into one that resembles the Oppo Find X3 series. In other words, it is sleek.
Motorola edge 50 ultra
The range-topping model, the Motorola edge 50 ultra benefits from the fast Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 Mobile Platform, along with 16 GB RAM with RAM Boost, up to 1 TB storage, Ultra Wideband (UWB), and a large, 144 Hz 6.67” Super HD (1220p) pOLED display, and Dolby Atmos support.
In the imaging department, the flagship edge 50 is outfitted with a 50 MP main camera, a 64 MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and 100x Super Zoom, a 50 MP ultrawide camera with macro vision, and a 50 MP selfie camera with autofocus. Imaging is bolstered by a new AI-imbued Photo Enhancement Engine for perfect pictures without intervention, plus there is adaptive stabilization, autofocus tracking, action shot, and long exposure.
Strangely, though, it has a rather small capacity battery, a 4,500 mAh battery. The battery features 125 W TurboPower charging that offers all-day power in just 4 minutes. In addition, it has 50 W wireless charging and there’s, of course, wireless power sharing.
Other worthy mentions include a thin sandblasted aluminum frame, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, and IP68 underwater protection.
Motorola edge 50 pro
The Motorola Edge 50 Pro is a step down from the ultra. It is a mid-ranger but despite that, it is no slouch in the specs. It features contoured edges, a sandblasted aluminum frame, and a choice of vegan leather or pearl finish which looks and feels as premium as most flagships.
Under the hood, it benefits from Qualcomm’s mid-range chip, Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 Mobile Platform, and features up to 12GB RAM and 512GB storage.
It has IP68 underwater protection and a 50MP camera system with a main f/1.4 aperture, a 10 MP 3x telephoto camera with 30x Super Zoom, a 13 MP ultrawide camera with Macro Vision, and a 50 MP front camera with autofocus. It includes AI-powered features like the Photo Enhancement Engine and Long Exposure mode.
The device has a 6.7″ 144Hz pOLED display with Super HD resolution and HDR10+ certification, Dolby Atmos sound, two large stereo speakers, Snapdragon Sound, Bluetooth connectivity, and it also has a 4,500 mAh battery that supports 125W TurboPower charging, and 50W wireless charging.
Motorola edge 50 fusion
Finally, the Motorola Edge 50 Fusion offers premium features with a vibrant design and slim profile, available in Hot Pink, Marshmallow Blue, and Forest Blue. It is equipped with IP68 underwater protection and Corning Gorilla Glass, ensuring durability against dust, water, and accidental drops.
It is powered by a Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 chip. Not surprisingly, imaging takes centerstage and in this case, it has a got a 50MP main camera with LYTIA’s LYT-700C sensor for high-speed, low-noise capturing in low-light conditions, and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) to prevent blurring. It also has a 13MP ultrawide camera and Macro Vision for close-ups, along with a 32MP front camera with Quad Pixel technology for improved selfies.
Other notables include a 120 Hz 6.7″ Full HD+ endless edge pOLED display with 10-bit color depth, Dolby Atmos support, Hi-Res certified sound, IP68 underwater protection, and Corning Gorilla Glass.
Pricing and Availability
The new Motorola edge 50 pro is available in European markets with an MSRP of €699 (about US$762). It has also reached Latin America markets, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico. It will also be available in Asia and Oceania.
The Motorola edge 50 ultra and entry-level edge 50 fusion should be available as we speak for €999 and €399 (around US$1,088 and US$435), respectively.
