You heard it was coming, and now the Nintendo Switch 2 is officially here. First previewed by Nintendo in January, the next-generation console is set to launch on June 5, 2025, bringing powerful new hardware, reimagined online capabilities, and fresh ways to connect with players. With pricing and availability now confirmed, here’s everything you need to know.

The Nintendo Switch 2 features a 7.9-inch LCD screen with a resolution upgrade to 1080p. When docked, it supports 4K output, offering vibrant visuals and smoother gameplay. The display also includes HDR and VRR support, delivering stunning color and clarity. Under the hood, the console boasts significantly improved CPU and GPU performance, enabling frame rates of up to 120 fps in compatible games. The internal storage has been expanded to 256GB, a major leap from the original model’s 32 GB. For additional storage, it supports microSD Express cards, which provide faster data speeds than previous microSD models.
The new Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically to the system with a satisfying snap. Each can also function as a mouse in compatible games, allowing for new control possibilities. They feature customizable rear buttons and even include an audio jack, catering to diverse gaming preferences. The system also introduces a freely adjustable stand, letting players find the perfect viewing angle, and an additional USB-C port on the top for charging while in tabletop mode or connecting accessories like a USB-C camera for video chat.
One of the standout features is GameChat, which allows players to voice or video chat with friends while gaming. With the press of the C Button on the right Joy-Con 2, users can quickly access chat. The built-in mic supports voice chat with up to 12 people, and if a compatible USB-C camera is connected, up to four friends can share their screens and video chat simultaneously. Until the end of March 2026, GameChat will be available without a Nintendo Switch Online membership. After that, an active subscription will be required. To ensure a safe experience, children under 16 will need parental approval to use the feature via the updated Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app.

Nintendo Switch 2 will also support GameShare, a new feature that lets players share and play the same game with others who don’t own a copy. If one person has a compatible game, they can invite others to temporarily play it via local play on their Switch 2 or original Switch. Between Switch 2 consoles, GameShare can also be used in conjunction with GameChat for online multiplayer sessions.
In addition to its own game library, the Switch 2 is backward compatible with most Nintendo Switch titles, ensuring a seamless transition for existing players. Nintendo also announced that the system will launch with exclusive titles like Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bonanza, and Kirby Air Riders. For fans of classic gaming, Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics will debut on launch day for Nintendo Switch 2 owners with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. The initial lineup includes F-Zero GX, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and SOULCALIBUR II, all with enhanced resolution and clarity. A dedicated wireless GameCube-style controller will also be available for purchase.
Nintendo is offering a special launch bundle that includes the console and a download code for Mario Kart World for a suggested price of US$499.99. The standard Switch 2 model will retail for US$449.99, with pre-orders beginning on April 9, 2025. The console will hit shelves worldwide on launch day.
