Xiaomi wasn’t the only one to show up at MWC 2025 with a concept phone featuring an external lens—Realme brought one too. Enter the Realme Interchangeable Lens Concept Phone, a device reminiscent of Xiaomi’s 12S Ultra Concept Phone from 2022. Like its predecessor, this phone has a camera module designed for interchangeable lenses, marking Realme’s first foray into this territory.

The phone boasts a custom Sony 1-inch sensor and supports swappable SLR lenses. From what we’ve seen, it includes an adapter that allows it to switch between compatible lenses—even one offering up to 10x lossless optical zoom. Of course, it’s still a concept, so expect some rough edges—literally. For starters, the original camera module has uneven edges due to the ring tab required to secure the adapter.
Will this ever make it to production? Probably not. But imagine a future where all phones come with an adapter and a main sensor built for external lenses. Anyone wanting a serious mobile photography upgrade could just slap on the lens of their choice. That would be nice. If it happens, entry-level DSLRs might be in trouble.
I know, I know—the naysayers will scoff. But remember what digital cameras did to film? Or how smartphones practically wiped out point-and-shoots? It could happen. Never say never. Until then, entry-level DSLRs are safe because whether it’s Realme or Xiaomi, these are just concepts. For now [CH].
