Ricoh GR 30th Anniversary
Three decades after the original RICOH GR1 changed compact photography, the GR series is celebrating its 30th anniversary with commemorative products, fan events, and a reminder that sometimes, the best camera is still the one that fits in your pocket.

We literally just caught up with the RICOH GR IV after accidentally letting it slip past us. Now, Ricoh has given us another reason to talk about one of photography’s most beloved pocket cameras. The GR series is officially turning 30.

Ricoh GR 30th Anniversary

The story began in October 1996 with the RICOH GR1, a compact film camera that quickly earned a reputation for producing images far beyond what its size suggested. Fast forward three decades, and the formula remains remarkably unchanged. Sure, the film has been replaced by APS-C sensors, autofocus has become smarter, and image stabilization has joined the party, but the GR is still, at heart, a compact camera built for people who simply love taking photographs.

Ricoh has adopted the slogan “Forever a Snapshooter” for the anniversary, and honestly, it could not be more fitting. While much of the camera industry has spent years chasing longer zoom ranges, more lenses, and increasingly complicated feature lists, the GR has stubbornly stuck to its guns. One fixed wide-angle lens, a body that disappears into your pocket, and image quality that continues to punch well above its weight.

The company also teased a lineup of 30th anniversary commemorative products and GR fan events scheduled for autumn 2026. Details remain under wraps, but if the GR’s loyal following is anything to go by, collectors may want to start clearing some shelf space now.

Fun Fact: If you thought the GR series only began in 2013, you’re not alone. Ricoh actually traces the digital GR lineage back to the Ricoh GR DIGITAL, which debuted in 2005. The 2013 Ricoh GR simply marked the beginning of the modern APS-C era, which is why so many photographers see it as a fresh start for the series.

Three decades is no small feat in consumer electronics. Trends come and go, technologies evolve, but the RICOH GR keeps proving that sometimes, the best camera is still the one you actually carry with you. If that’s not a legacy worth celebrating, I don’t know what is.
