Never mind that Misato Katsuragi’s favorite and most frequently consumed beer is Yebisu Beer, a real-life premium Japanese pilsner. Because the real-life Evangelion cobranded beer is actually Sapporo Draft Beer Black Label. Though it is not strictly unrelated. Yebisu is directly tied to Sapporo Breweries, seeing as it is owned and brewed by the long-running Japanese brewery.
Anyhoo, Sapporo Breweries has announced a limited-edition Neon Genesis Evangelion collaboration version of its Sapporo Draft Beer Black Label beer cans to celebrate the anime franchise’s 30th anniversary. The special cans launched nationwide in Japan on April 7, 2026.
The 350 ml can features Evangelion Unit-01, while the 500 ml can sports a special illustration of Evangelion Unit-13 created by Mahiro Maeda, who served as a director on Shin Evangelion.
The contents—a.k.a. the beer—remain unchanged. So no, there is no LCL-flavored beer. But what does LCL taste like anyway?
Sapporo is also offering additional Evangelion-themed content through its CLUB Black Label membership site, including collaboration-related promotions and materials. The company plans to sell around 370,000 cases of the collaboration cans. Not sure how many have been moved since.
The Sapporo Draft Beer Black Label “Evangelion” Design Can is available in a choice of 350 ml and 500 ml cans [JP]. As for pricing, it is sold under open market pricing.
In addition, Sapporo is also serving up some cool cobranded merch [JP], including a bar glass (8,250 yen, sold out), a tote bag (6,600 yen), a couple of T-shirts (13,200 yen), and a coaster (3,300 yen).
