Now that Masamune Shirow’s iconic Ghost In The Shell has made it to Hollywood, we suspect there’s going to be a host of anime/manga-turned-live action movie coming our way. Already, we have heard Akira is being given a serious thought after years of ons and offs (GITS is likely the catalyst for the ‘sudden’ progress we heard now), and apparently, Jordan Peele is in talks to direct this other cult Japanese sci-fi manga. It won’t happen anytime soon though; it will take a while, but this also allow time for sci-fi nuts and fans alike to do some serious recaps and what better way than to flip through the entire series, presented in six beautiful hardcover volumes, contained in the Akira 35th Anniversary Box Set (Kodansha Comics, ISBN-13 978-1632364616)? There are many LEGO geniuses and Sariel is among them, specializing in custom Technic creations. One of his latest works that caught our eyes is this motorcycle as featured in the now-classic Akira anime. The topic of the unnamed bike rode by the 80s manga protagonist has been tackled by other top-notch builders, but what makes Sariel’s iteration stands out are the custom stickers, working LED lights, and functional drive and steering. And yes, it is electric powered, albeit it being an external one, due to the compact size of the model. The 715g model is driven by two motors; one drives a pair of small wheels directly under the chassis, right in front of the rear-wheel and hidden away by the side fairings, and another is used to manipulate the steering. apart from Ghost in the Shell, Akira is perhaps the most defining manga to ever risen from the land of the rising sun. my childhood fantasy about the future practically grew out from Akira, starting with Kaneda’s badass motorcycle. though i was, in part, disturbed by Katsuhiro Otomo’s depiction of the future, but what do expect? i was just a teeny weeny kid back then and as kids, we were all impressionable little things. anyway, when Akira transits from manga to the big screen, naturally, it went on to become a worldwide phenomenon and that was 25 long years ago. fast forward to today, this classic animation is reaping the rewards of today’s audio and visual technology and reenters into the lives of long time fans and sci-fi nuts in the form of the Akira: 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray + DVD Combo.
