Akira 35th Anniversary Box Set (Comics) by Katsuhiro Otomo

Now that Masamune Shirow’s iconic Ghost In The Shell has made it to Hollywood, we suspect there’s going to be a host of anime/manga-turned-live action movie coming our way. Already, we have heard Akira is being given a serious thought after years of ons and offs (GITS is likely the catalyst for the ‘sudden’ progress we heard now), and apparently, Jordan Peele is in talks to direct this other cult Japanese sci-fi manga. It won’t happen anytime soon though; it will take a while, but this also allow time for sci-fi nuts and fans alike to do some serious recaps and what better way than to flip through the entire series, presented in six beautiful hardcover volumes, contained in the Akira 35th Anniversary Box Set (Kodansha Comics, ISBN-13 978-1632364616)?

And oh, yes. This cult sci-fi manga that’s often credited for kickstarting the sci-fi anime/manga revolution is in its mid thirties now and in retrospect, the storyline and all those futuristic stuff the series presented was way ahead of its time. Hell, I dare say it could be relevant to this day. I am no hardcore fan, but one thing for sure, Akira was one of the core influencers in my life that made me a tech-loving, science-believing, futurist (well, sort of). Anyways, back to the Akira 35th Anniversary Box Set… The box set is expected to hit the shelves in October 24, 2017, and it will come with the original Japanese art and for the first time, in right-to-left reading format.

Not exactly as ‘authentic’ as one might hoped, but it should come as a bonus for those (namely, me), who can’t get of over the oriental left-to-right format. Also include is the hardcover Akira Club art book and an exclusive patch with the iconic pill design.
