Ferrari takes wrap off the 458 Italia Grand Am [photos]

Ferrari debut its new 458 Italia Grand Am race car on the July 18 at the Fiorano Circuit. based on the GT3 version of the V8 Ferrari Berlinetta, the 458 Italia Grand Am race car is developed in conjunction with Michelotto Automobili for the purpose of competing in the famous North American series (hence, the namesake ‘Grand Am’). since it is built for the American championship, the car has numerous difference from its European model. in meeting with the American regulations, the car now has 500 horsepower, 70 less than its stock engine, and sport a less efficient aerodynamics than the GT version. the redline is now peg at 8,000 rpm, instead of the stock 9,000 rpm on its stock form. other changes include a less efficient aerodynamics as compared to its GT version, the inclusion of a roll-over bar for added lateral protection, and the lack of ABS and traction control. check out a few more images of the Ferrari 458 Italia Grand Am race car, courtesy of NetCarShow, after the break. video: a day in the life of an Audi (Le Mans) driver

we all know the mechanical strain that a race car is being put through in sporting race. we also know the physical punishment a race car driver have to endure in every race. you know, stuff like a F1 driver loses 2-3 liters of water through perspiration during a race, can lost up to 4 kg of weight in just one race and are subject to high G forces that could potentially knock out a person et cetera. we all knew that, well, at least most of us do in theory and Audi knows that we know the facts but in an effort to highlight what their Le Man race car drivers have to deal with, it has created an animated short that tells it all in just two and half minutes. we are all excited about Nissan’s race-prepped EV based on the LEAF. if you haven’t know, it is called the Nissan LEAF NISMO RC. we first featured it last month, and more recently, updated it with more photos. today we are please to feature the first video of the Nissan LEAF NISMO RC hot from Nissan. check out this lengthy video (about 8 minutes plus) after the break. this year, Nissan will prove that racing sports can be green too. set to debut at the 2011 New York International Auto Show is the Nissan LEAF NISMO RC. just in case you are wondering what the ‘RC’ stands for, it stands for Racing Competition. as the name suggest, the Nissan LEAF NISMO RC is based on the current production LEAF electric car but prep for serious racing by NISMO, Nissan’s motorsports arm. Formula One race to go green in 2013 with hybrid engines

it may sounds ridiculous to true-blue horsepower-hungry racing fans, but according a report by CNET UK, this is going to happen in 2013. come 2013, Formula One race cars will be powered by smaller, more fuel efficient hybrid engines. currently, Formula One race cars are powered by naturally-aspirated 2.4 liter, V-8 engines which will be replaced by 1.6 liter, four cylinders turbo-charged engine with Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS). this will, reportedly, reduce fuel consumption by as much as 50 per cent.
