for those who fondly remembers Toyota’s iconic performance cars such as the 2000GT, Celica, MR2 and the Supra, the Toyota FT-1 Concept is your hope of renewing your love for high performance Japanese sports car. the “FT” here stands for “Future Toyota” which indicates that this ride is the Japanese automaker’s vision for performance ride of the future, but whether will it become a reality remains to be seen. judging from the radical outer shell, we’d say it is a long shot, but still, a hope is a hope and that means a whole lot to those who reminiscences about the once lively Japanese import scene.
despite being officially unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show, little is known about this sexy beast, which has a design born out of Calty Design Research in Sony Playstation Gran Turismo game environment. yes. this beauty has popped out of the screen and onto the stage, but will it stroll out of the design studio and onto the street? well, your guess is as good as ours. the “1” in the namesake represents the ultimate, which according to the designers at Calty Design Research, is the “ultimate expression of a Toyota Coupe design, building upon Toyota’s rich sports coupe heritage dating back to the 2000GT, Celica, Supra, MR2 and most recently Scion FR-S.”
that said, this particular example draws its design inspiration with heavy doses of Celica and Supra heritage, and resulting in a supposedly “aggressive, track-focused sports car concept with a presence that has been amplified for shock and awe.” well, we certainly see that latter factors in it and the FT-1 is certainly a love-at-first-sight for us. now the question remains is: what goes under the hood? for now, this belongs to the very early stage of the concept journey, but if you can’t wait to get behind the wheel of one, you can download it in Gran Turismo 6 starting from January 14.
