UBTech U World U1 Consumer Humanoid Robot
The future has officially arrived. UBTECH's consumer humanoid robot can walk, talk, recognize emotions, remember your preferences, and even give you a hug—though don't expect it to fold your laundry just yet.

Are you disappointed that 2026 is still not the future? Well, don’t be, because it is because consumer-grade “ultra-biomimetic” humanoid robots are no longer science fiction; they are real, and they are available to order.

From UBTECH, a company that pretty much started out making robotic toys before evolving into humanoid robots, comes the new U World U1 Series. Before you jump with joy thinking you can finally delegate your household chores to a robot, you should know these are not worker robots. That’s right. Folding clothes is still very much your job, along with every other chore.

The craziest part is that these robots not only look like you and me (OK, except they’re prettier and more handsome), but they can also walk and interact with you. Even so, they are essentially high-tech trophies, serving as eye-pleasing emotional companions in addition to being interactive entertainment robots.

The U1 Series is so realistic that you’d think they were humans pretending to be robots. It boasts 88 high-precision joints with a dual-pivot biomimetic cervical spine, along with more than 30 facial micro-expressions, allowing it to hold hands, hug, blink, and display lifelike gestures. Under the hood is an emotional AI model that understands tone of voice and facial expressions. It can chat with you when you’re in a good mood, comfort you when you’re feeling down, and gradually learn your preferences over time.

As far as entertainment goes, it can sing, dance, tell jokes, and play music. Interestingly, it also supports licensed IP content, including customized character interactions, though details on exactly which IPs are available have yet to be revealed. So yeah, it is basically a social robot.

It can entertain children, too. The robot comes preloaded with more than 200 pieces of content, ranging from stories and English lessons to dance classes. There is a catch, though: only around 40% of the content is free. Accessing the rest requires an annual subscription of 399 yuan (around US$56).

While it is not designed to work like a butler or servant, it can still perform a few simple tasks, such as delivering small items, controlling compatible smart home appliances, and patrolling the home for basic security duties.

The robot is battery-powered, offering up to four hours of runtime on a single charge. Should the battery eventually need replacing, the robot has to be sent back to the factory, with the replacement costing around 800 yuan (around US$112).

Back to the interactions. While it offers emotional comfort and can hold conversations, do not expect it to be as capable as today’s smart speakers.

Design-wise, the U1 Series features life-size human proportions, flexible electronic skin with simulated body temperature, realistic pores, and even fingerprints. The U World U1 Humanoid is also customizable inside and out. AI-powered OmniMirror AE lets users personalize both its appearance and personality. Finally, it features locally encrypted data storage, giving users full control over their personal data.

The U World U1 Humanoid was unveiled on June 30, 2026. There are two characters to choose from: Lingye and Xiaoyou. The former is an 183 cm (6 ft) tall, 42 kg (92.6 lb) male robot, while the latter is a 168 cm (5 ft 6 in) female robot weighing 35.2 kg (77.6 lb).

They are available to order in China in three versions: U1 Lite, U1 Pro, and U1 Ultra.

The U1 Lite is an upper-body desktop companion that starts at 119,800 yuan (around US$16,700). The U1 Pro is the full-body version featuring the aforementioned 88 degrees of freedom, along with walking and conversational capabilities. It starts at 169,800 yuan (around US$23,700).

Finally, there is the holy grail of the lineup: the U1 Ultra. It packs 2,070 TOPS of AI computing power, autonomous mobility, and is designed for healthcare, elderly care, rehabilitation, and social assistance. It commands 990,000 yuan (around US$138,000) for the Lingye version and 880,000 yuan (around US$123,000) for the Xiaoyou version.

I know. The movements and interactions may still fall short of expectations, but at least it is real—which is probably how the real-world Westworld begins.
