Going electric usually means giving your clutch hand less to do. Not if it’s a Yamaha, though. Its YE-01 Racing Concept is an electric motocross bike with a mechanical clutch, because where’s the fun if there’s no control over how the power reaches the dirt, right?
Developed with French electric motorcycle maker Electric Motion, the YE-01 pairs a purpose-built electric power unit with a newly designed frame drawing on Yamaha’s YZ450F chassis know-how. The intent is to keep the rider connected to the machine, even as the means of propulsion changes.

That clutch is the interesting bit. Rather than leaving everything to the throttle, riders can use the lever to modulate drive force. Electrification need not mean retiring a skill you spent years learning—or giving your left hand a permanent holiday.
The concept appeared at EICMA last year. Yamaha’s latest announcement scheduled a display and exhibition run at the 2026 Motocross of Nations in Ernée, France, beginning October 2, as a step toward competing in the upcoming MXEP electric motocross series.
There are no power, battery capacity, weight, or runtime figures in the announcement, nor a production price or release date. For now, this is a racing development project.
Still, I like the thinking. Change what powers the bike, keep the parts that make riding it engaging. The dirt doesn’t care where the torque comes from. You probably don’t. You just want to feel in control again, like the good’ol days. If you are keen, you may get the lowdown here.
