I am not particularly a huge fan of the Casio G-Shock MR-G series but man, this newest addition to the MR-G line of luxury G-Shock timepieces really had me at hello. OK. That’s not completely true. The MR-G Frogman sold me and I thought the Bruce Lee edition was cool too. But that’s not the point.
Based on the icon 2100 silhouette, the new Casio G-Shock MRGB2100B-1A draws inspiration from the ancient Japanese interlocking woodworking technique of kigumi—a construction method originating from the Heian period (794-1185) that relies on intricately carved and processed wood ends to form a sturdy framework without using nails or glue.
The watch touts a Multi-Component structure with no less than 27 separate components, and each part is meticulously polished before assembly. In a way, the MRGB2100B-1A is a Takumi timepiece.
The timepiece rocks a full-metal exterior, a corrugated dial design with lattice-like openings for solar power generation, and a Multi-Guard structure for superior shock absorption. The exquisitiveness is not limited to the aesthetic; it permeates the materials used.
The timepiece has a top bezel crafted from CARARION and band links made of DAT55G which is stronger than pure titanium. Meanwhile, the case, case back, and buttons are made from Ti64 titanium alloy.
Features-wise, the new Casio G-Shock MRGB2100B-1A has everything you expect of a 2100 MR-G. It includes a shock-resistant structure (of course!), ISO 764-compliant magnetism resistance, 200M water resistance, Tough Solar power, Smartphone Link, Radio-controlled (Multiband 6) for precise timekeeping, auto hand home position correction, Super Illuminator LED light, and Date display and day indicator.
The MRGB2100B-1A can be had for US$4,800 from select Jewelers, gshock.com, and the G-SHOCK Soho store. However, last checked, it is not available on casio.com. Perhaps, it has sold out? I cannot be sure.
