Sony is cashing in on the web-slinger franchise. If you have not already heard, there is a new superhero movie from the Spider-Man’s universe. But it has nothing to do with Peter Parker, Miles Morales, or Gwen Stacy; it’s Cassandra Webb aka Madame Web.
But Marvel Comics purists be warned; this Madame Web is not quite the Madame Web you know. In the comics, this unlikely superhero is an elderly blind woman whose life support system resembles a spiderweb. So, yeah, she does not go around kicking ass. Instead, she has powerful psychic abilities which allow her to see the future.
Here’s the gist of the live-action version:
“Meanwhile, in another universe…” In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.”
There’s the first trailer embedded below. Don’t watch it if you don’t want any spoilers.
