8849 Tank Pad 5G Rugged Tablet with built-in Projector

8849, a sub-brand of Unihertz that goes all out in ruggedizing its phones, has recently launched its first tablet. The Tank Pad, as it’s aptly called, isn’t just the brand’s first tablet—it’s also the first 5G rugged tablet with a built-in projector. As always, 8849 isn’t just about ruggedness; it’s about seeing how much tech they can cram into a single device.

The projector, located on one side of the chunky tablet, isn’t a half-hearted gimmick. It’s a 120 Hz DLP projector with 100 lumens, complemented by a dual-speaker setup for stereo sound for a full outdoor movie experience. But the surprises don’t stop there. Just like the Tank 3 Pro rugged smartphone, this beast comes with a huge-ass camping light embedded on its back. Because, flash is just so yesterday. Am I rite?

When it comes to durability, the Tank Pad is as tough as they come. Built to MIL-STD-810H standards and rated IP68 and IP69, this tablet laughs in the face of drops, dust, and water. Under the hood, it’s powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 8200 chipset (it’s a 2022 mid-range chipset, btw), backed by 16 GB of RAM (plus 16 GB extended RAM) and 512 GB of storage, expandable to 2 TB via a TF card slot.

Up front, you’ll find a 10.95-inch FHD display with a 120 Hz refresh rate and a 32 MP front camera featuring the IMX616 sensor. Around the back, there’s a lone 50 MP camera. Strangely though, there’s no emphasis on the rear camera. I guess when you buy a rugged tablet, imaging isn’t a priority. Then again, neither is video calls, or Netfill and chill.

Powering it all is an absolutely massive 21,000 mAh battery, paired with a 66 W fast charger that can also juice up your smaller devices. And with dual 5G SIM support for global networks, it’s perfect for the ultimate world citizen—or someone who really likes camping with a tablet (and watching movies out in the wild).

And yes, this big guy can make calls too which kind of makes it the world’s biggest smartphone. But if putting a huge tablet on your face for calls feels weird, you can also use wired earphones with a microphone to make calls and oh yes, it has a super hight-tech 3.5 mm headphone jack which is such a rarity in this day and age.

The 8849 Tank Pad 5G Rugged Tablet with built-in Projector has a retail price of US$999 but it looks like there is an introductory price where you can secure a unit for US$599.
