Have you ever heard of the brand ‘8849’? I wouldn’t be surprised if you haven’t. It’s kind of obscure but not all quite that obscure because it is actually produced by Unihertz, which is pretty well-established in making rugged devices. The latest addition to 8849’s portfolio, the Tank 3 Pro, is bound to turn heads with its size.
It’s a chunky device, and for good reasons: it packs a 100 lumens 120 Hz DLP laser projector and an insane 23,800 mAh battery. I know, it’s almost surreal. I imagine it’s every camper’s dream come true—being able to relax in the comfort of their tent, in the wild, watching their favorite shows without worrying about draining the device’s juice.
While most rugged phones are designed for industrial use, the Tank 3 Pro is clearly intended for everyone, including adventurers. The projector isn’t just for entertainment; it can be handy for work presentations as well.
It features adjustable focus, automatic correction (possibly auto keystone), and is capable of projecting a 40-inch image from a meter (3.3 feet) away, up to a whopping 150-inch image from 4 meters (13 feet).
The device is IP68-rated, though there’s no mention of specific durability tests. However, 8849 does refer to it as a rugged phone and it certainly looks tough. I wouldn’t intentionally abuse it – that’s what I am trying to say.
It also boasts a couple of other adventure-focused features, including a large flashlight panel on the back dubbed a camping light. In addition to regular flashlight mode (called “explosion flash”), it offers SOS as well as red and blue warning lights.
The device comes pre-installed with a variety of professional apps for work and adventure, including noise testing and leveling. It also includes wilderness essentials like positioning, supporting GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, and Galileo.
The phone is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8200 chip, with 36 GB of RAM (18 + 18 GB extended RAM), and 512 GB of ROM, expandable up to 2 TB via a TF card.
Other notable features include built-in cooling fans, a 120 Hz 6.79-inch HD display, a 200 MP AI main camera, a 64 MP Super Night Vision camera, and a 23,800 mAh battery with 120 W fast charging.
The 8849 Tank 3 Pro Rugged Smartphone with Projector was launched in March and is available internationally via AliExpress. At the time of this post, the device is listed at a discounted price of US$692.45.
