The word “Monaco” in a TAG Heuer is enough to associate it with motorsports (thankfully not casinos). It has a special charm—more than the Formula 1 series, if you ask me. But TAG Heuer just did something that makes it scream motorsports even louder. Folks, this is the new TAG Heuer Monaco Speed 12.

Yes, it’s a Monaco. Yes, it has the same iconic square silhouette. But the Speed 12 pays homage to motorsports—and to internal-combustion-engine cars in general—using more than marketing hype, mild tweaks to the dial face, and/or color associations. It has, wait for it, miniature engine pistons on the dial. You know, actual 3D pistons, not prints, embossing, debossing, or whatever. It is just about the coolest watch dial ever, outside of the Jacob & Co. Opera Godfather 50th Anniversary’s.
The twelve pistons circle the dial and serve as the hour indicators. As the minute hand completes a full revolution, one piston rotates to reveal the next hour while another returns to its original position. The whole thing mimics the firing sequence of a V12 engine, turning the passage of time into a miniature mechanical performance.
Powering this automotive-inspired madness is the Calibre TH84-00 automatic movement, developed by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. The movement is based on the patented Spin Time architecture, reworked here specifically for the Monaco Speed 12. If you are wondering why this watch costs more than some actual cars, this is one reason.
The 40 mm case is crafted from Grade 5 titanium and paired with a domed sapphire crystal, sapphire caseback, and an open-worked dial that looks suspiciously like someone shrunk an engine bay and stuffed it into a wristwatch. Completing the look is a black rubber strap with textile embossing and red stitching.
The TAG Heuer Monaco Speed 12 is limited to just 50 pieces worldwide and will be available from December 2026. The asking price? Well, you better be seated for this. It commands a cool US$87,000. It certainly is expensive. Then again, how often do you get a V12 on your wrist?
