The radiator shield in Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory is a capable shield that protects Gundam RX-78GP02A. The Cospa Gundam GP02 Shield Backpack will not do the same for you but goddamn it, it is one dope backpack for even a non-fan of Mobile Suit Gundam.
Cospa Co., Ltd. leverages the sections of the original shield to realize 4 functional pockets on the front, of which three boasts Velcro closure. All told there are 7 pockets for storing small items – in addition to the main compartment – allowing users to store small items based on their frequency of access.
Aside from the backpack‘s top cover, the main compartment also boasts a drawstring closure to keep contents in. On the inside it is further compartmentalized, allowing you to separate A4-size documents and tablets with a laptop (up to 13-inch).
Meanwhile, there is an additional strap on each shoulder strap that lets you attach carabiners with stuff like earbuds, keys, and whatnot, on them for super quick access. Finally, there is a sternum strap for secured backpacking which also help to reduce the load on your back.
Like an actual shield, the Cospa Gundam GP02 Shield Backpack allows you to carry it like one. Yes. Really. How’s that not a fun backpack, right? In addition, you may carry the bag across your body as a cross-body bag.
Made of highly durable fabric (note: not rocket or blast-proof), the Cospa Gundam GP02 Shield shares the shape and form of the iconic shield. The red markings on the shield have been recreated using synthetic leather which extrudes a sense of luxury, while the refrigerant discharge ports on four corners are also faithfully reproduced, along with the rivet points.
It is a voluminous bag. At 50 cm (about 20 inches) tall, 40 cm (about 16 inches) wide, and 15 cm (6 inches) deep, it is 140% larger than Cospa’s previous bags.
The Cospa Gundam GP02 Shield Backpack is slated to hit the shelves starting in mid-September 2023 in Japan in Prototype Gray and Rollout Black for 39,600 yen (US$295 based on today’s going rate). You may pre-order it on Hobby Link Japan (US$319.77) as well as from Amazon.jp (37,199 yen).
