Disney Imagineering HoloTile Omnidirectional Walking Floor

If you haven’t already heard, Walt Disney has a research division that creates amazing things like real-life working lightsabers, free-roaming robotic actors, and stunt robots, which are used at its theme parks and in making TV shows and movies. The latest tech to emerge from this amazing R&D division is called HoloTile.

HoloTile is a high-tech omnidirectional walking pad that allows walking in the same position which could be used to simulate walking when in a VR environment. VR walking pad isn’t new, obviously, but what makes the HoloTile shine is you can walk in any direction and the individual elements (“tiles”) will work to ensure you stay within the pad.

But that’s not even the most magical part; the most amazing feature is multiple people can be on it, with each person able to walk independently.

The HoloTile application goes beyond Virtual Reality. It could allow virtual tours in limited space, embedded on stage to expand performers’ stage, and even move objects remotely as part of a film’s special effects.
