Navigation, translation, and real-time prompts appear directly in your line of sight while keeping your hands free and your attention where it matters.

If you have not been in touch with the world of smart glasses, you may not know that the days of chunky smart eyewear are behind us. The Even G2 by Berlin-based startup Even Realities is one such smart glasses that demonstrates smart glasses can look like regular eyewear.

That’s right, my friends. What looks like an ordinary pair of glasses is actually a smart wearable. And as you can deduce from the name, it is already in its second generation.

Billed as everyday display smart glasses, the Even G2 uses two upgraded microLED projectors that beam light into waveguide lenses, creating a larger multi-layer display with what the company describes as extraordinary clarity. The display appears in a non-distracting monochrome green and essentially floats in your field of view with added dimension. Seriously, like, how futuristic is that? I’d say “very”.

With the multi-layer display, information appears more intelligently. Instant notifications show up closer, while ongoing content quietly waits in the background. The goal is simple: present the right information at the moment it matters without overwhelming you.

It is also good for riding, too. When riding a bicycle, navigation instructions can appear right in front of you, allowing you to keep your eyes on the road while staying completely hands-free.

The glasses can also act as a real-time translator, helping you “see” what someone speaking another language is saying. It is a bit like the Babel fish from Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, except without a nasty, small yellow creature burrowing into your ear. I’d say this is more practical than the leech-like creature.

Another feature called Conversate quietly assists during conversations by serving up hints, helpful context, and AI-generated summaries. The system listens to the question being asked and suggests contextual answers or talking points. When the conversation ends, you can generate transcripts and AI summaries.

There is also a teleprompt feature, which could make traditional teleprompters obsolete and enable cleaner stage setups. The glasses also include an AI assistant called Even AI, which can summarize topics, answer questions, and provide quick contextual information.

In many ways, the Even G2 behaves a bit like a phone, just without the distractions. It focuses on the information you actually need. A built-in dashboard provides at-a-glance information such as the date, weather, appointments, items from QuickList, and basic health and activity statistics.

The display itself has also improved. The Even G2 offers a 75 percent larger and sharper display, delivering crisp text through high-precision multi-layer lenses. These lenses maintain 98 percent pass-through vision and peripheral visibility, while being 30 percent thinner than before.

Prescription lenses are supported, though only single-vision prescriptions are currently available. If you require both near and distance correction, this may not be ideal.

The glasses themselves are also slimmer and lighter. They feature titanium temples and a magnesium frame, making the frame and end pieces 15 percent lighter overall. The Even G2 is also IP65 rated for dust and water resistance.

For interaction, the glasses include four built-in microphones, Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity, and several control methods. You can operate the system using tilt gestures, touch-sensitive pads on the temple tips, or the optional companion accessory, much like the STARV View AR Glasses.

That accessory is the Even R1 smart ring. Crafted from zirconia ceramic and stainless steel, the ring acts as a control interface for the glasses while also functioning as a health-tracking device.

Battery life is rated for up to two days from the glasses’ 192 mAh battery. The included carrying and charging case contains a 2,000 mAh battery, good for up to seven full recharges.

Other display specifications include 640 × 350 resolution, 60 Hz refresh rate, 1,200 nits brightness, and a 27.5-degree field of view, along with auto brightness control and anti-reflective and anti-fingerprint coatings.

The Even Realities G2 Smart Glasses are available now for US$599. The prescription version costs US$159 more or higher, depending on the lenses. Meanwhile, the Even R1 Smart Ring sells for US$249.
