Huawei Mate X6 Folding Phone

This year’s flagship folding device from Huawei is a few months late. Last year, the Mate X5 was revealed in September but this year, Huawei held back the announcement till November when it was announced with the new Mate70 series, possibly to let the Mate XT, the world’s first tri-fold phone, get in the groove.

The Huawei Mate X6 [CH] is here to make your smartphone feel like a relic from the Stone Age. This foldable marvel boasts a 7.93-inch LTPO OLED main screen with a resolution of 2,440 x 2,240 pixels and a peak brightness of 1,800 nits. When folded, it transforms into a sleek 6.45-inch cover screen with 2,500 nits of brightness, perfect for those who like their screens bright enough to rival the sun. Rounding up the display specs are the Huawei X-True Display and Kunlun Glass 2nd Generation.

Under the hood, the Mate X6 is powered by Huawei’s in-house Kirin 9020 chipset, featuring a 12-core CPU and a Maleoon 920 GPU. This powerhouse is backed by 12GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage, ensuring you have enough space for all your cat videos and selfies.

The camera setup is nothing short of impressive, with a 50 MP main camera sporting a variable aperture (f/1.4-f/4.0), a 48 MP periscope telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom, and a 40 MP ultra-wide-angle lens. The Ultra Chroma Camera captures colors so vividly that you’ll think you’re looking at the real thing.

The Mate X6 also features a 5,110 mAh battery with 66 W wired and 50 W wireless charging, so you can spend less time tethered to a wall and more time showing off your fancy new phone.

With an IPX8 rating, the Mate X6 can handle a splash or two, but don’t go swimming with it just yet. And for those who love a bit of luxury, the phone comes in Nebula Red, Black, and Nebula Gray colors.

As far as design goes, the new Mate X6 inherits the same design language as the Mate X5. Aesthetically, it may look similar to its predecessor but Huawei outdone itself this time by making it even thinner and lighter. It is just 9.85 or 9.9 mm thin closed—depending on the back cover material, 4.6 mm thin opened, and tips the scales at a mere 239g. It is not lighter by a lot. But how the engineers managed to trim the profile is absolutely bonkers. In contrast, the X5 is 11.08 mm closed, and 5.3 mm when opened.

All this cutting-edge tech comes at a price, of course. Following the unveiling of the Mate 70 series and Mate X6 in China late last month, the Huawei Mate X6 has launched in the international markets. The price in China starts at 12,999 yuan [CH], meanwhile, folks outside of China are expected to shell out at least €1,999 for one.
