You know a company is serious about innovation when it actually listens to what consumers want, unlike certain fruit-themed brands that recycle old tech and slap on a fresh coat of marketing. Huawei has no time for that. This is the company that gave us a tri-folding display smartphone, and now it’s rewriting the rulebook again with the Huawei Pura X.

Yes, the Pura series (formerly P series) now has its own folding phone, but unlike the Pocket series or Nova Flip, this one doesn’t follow the industry standard. Instead of a square when folded, it’s more rectangular, unfolding into something closer to a mini tablet than a stretched-out candy bar. And you know what? It looks awesome. When I first saw it, I thought: This is a must-have device this year. Then I saw the price, and well… more on that later.
The Huawei Pura X [CH] features a 6.3-inch LTPO2 OLED main display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 1320 x 2120 resolution, and up to 2500 nits of peak brightness. The 3.5-inch cover screen, also an LTPO2 OLED panel, shares the same 120Hz refresh rate but has a 980 x 980 resolution. Powering the device is Huawei’s Kirin 9020 chipset, ensuring smooth performance across the board. The phone packs up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, making it a beast in the memory department.
Huawei’s strong suit has always been cameras, and the Pura X does not disappoint. It boasts a triple-camera setup consisting of a 50MP main sensor with OIS, a 40MP ultra-wide lens, and an 8MP telephoto camera with 3.5x optical zoom. A 10.7MP front-facing camera handles selfies. Keeping everything running is a 4720mAh battery, which supports 66W wired charging, 40W wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging.
This is also the first Huawei small device to run HarmonyOS 5.0 NEXT, the company’s full break from Android. It is IPX8-rated for water resistance and comes in several finishes, including a Collector’s Edition with a tri-color back design.
Now, about that price. The Huawei Pura X starts at 7,499 yuan [CH] (about US$1,040) when it goes on sale in China on March 22. For comparison, the Oppo Find N5, a full-fledged bi-folding phone, starts at 8,999 yuan. It is a hefty price for a clamshell foldable, but breaking conventions has never been cheap.
