Huawei Pura 70 Series Smartphones

The highly anticipated Huawei has been officially unveiled. A couple of days before today’s reveal, the Chinese telecommunications equipment maker announced that the new P series would be rebranded as Pura, which is Latin for ‘pure’. So moving forward, there will no longer be a P series, making P60 the last of the P series.

There are four models in the new Huawei Pura70 Series: Pura70 [CH], Pura70 Pro [CH], Pura70 Pro+ [CH], and Pura70 Ultra [CH]. All models adopt a similar triangular camera bump for their tri-camera setup. However, the body design is not the same across the board. Except for the Pura70, which features an iPhone 14-like straight-edge design, the Pura70 Pro, Pro+, and Ultra share a similar rounded-edge frame design paired with a slightly curved-edge display.

Speaking of displays, the Pura70 is outfitted with a 6.6-inch FHD+ OLED variable refresh rate (1-120 Hz) LTPO display, while the Pro, Pro+, and Ultra feature a 6.8-inch FHD+ OLED variable refresh rate (1-120 Hz) LTPO display.

The standard Pura70 might as well be considered a SE equivalent since it is powered by the last-generation Hisilicon Kirin 9000s, while the rest of the devices are powered by the new Hisilicon Kirin 9010. As the model number suggests, the upgrade is minor.

The real showstopper is not the radical, triangular camera bump but the telescopic lens on the Ultra model. To avoid an ultra-thick camera bump due to the Ultra’s large 1-inch sensor main camera like on the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, Huawei engineers have devised a telescopic lens that extends only when the camera is turned on.

This design eliminates the need for a large bump. As a bonus, the extending lens, along with the familiar mechanical sound, mimics what an actual camera does. This mechanism has been tested to last 300,000 extensions and is IP68-rated for dust and water resistance, capable of withstanding water up to 2 meters (6.6 feet).

The Ultra also sets a new standard for super-fast image capturing. The ultra-focused imaging system, paired with the XD Motion motion engine, allows it to capture movements as fast as 300 km/h (186 mph).

Additionally, the super macro imaging feature uses the telephoto camera to execute ultra-close focuses of 5 cm, 35x super macro, and with an ultra-large aperture of f2.1, it enables exploration of microscopic wonders in low-light conditions. Finally, the telephoto lens allows up to a 200x zoom range while the XD Fusion Pro ensures high-quality, clear zoom, whether near or far.

The Huawei Pura70 Ultra goes on sale on April 18, at 10:08 AM China time for 9,999-10,999 yuan [CH] (US$1,381-1,519). The Huawei Pura70 Pro+ will go on sale on April 22, 10:08 AM China time for 7,999-8,999 yuan [CH] (US$1,105-1,243).
