I-O Data Evangelion CD Recorder for Smartphones

The much anticipated and awfully long delayed fourth Evangelion movie may have been postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but merchants are not holding back products that have been designed to commemorate the movie’s original theatrical release in June.

Japan’s maker of computer peripherals I-O Data is the latest to do so and its product? A CD reader/writer for smartphones, an EVA-themed CD Reco.

Make no mistake. This is not just cosmetics. Though it does come with two EVA-themed interchangeable top covers. For 19,800 yen (around US$184) plus tax, you will get the hardware with the said cover in a minimalistic EVA-branded packaging as well as a 2-CD album featuring 49 tracks pulled from the series and movies.

Co-branding aside, CD Reco does what CD Reco does best; it is a tray-type external optical drive that automatically rips music from a CD, encode it, and transfer it straight to a smartphone app – all without the need for a PC and wirelessly via WiFi.

In addition, it can also burn new CDs from your existing digital music files. But who does that these days anyways? But it totally can if you so desire. The drive will read music CD-R, music CD-RW, plus DVD-R and DVD-RW.
