You can find skateboard being sold everywhere. However, the last place you expect to find skateboards is IKEA. As it turns out, IKEA USA indeed do sell skateboards and it is called IKEA Spänst Skateboard Cruiser. Spänst is, btw, no way related to skateboard. It is loosely translated to “elasticity.” Is IKEA trying to say its skateboard is flexible like rubber? That, I do not know. Jokes, aside, Spänst is not quite the name of the skateboard; it is a collection.
Spänst is a limited edition collection designed in collaboration with LA-based fashion designer Chris Stamp and freelance designer Maja Ganszyniec. Spänst is inspired by street fashion and active lifestyle and hence, the existence of the skateboard. It includes “furniture, accessories and items for storing, displaying and organizing some of your favorites at home,” according to the official description. The collection even include a shoe rack that a couple of integrated skateboard racks.
IKEA Spänst Skateboard Cruiser features a painted birch plywood, aluminum, steel and plastic construction and it is born out of Stamp’s influence living in So Cal where skating was part of his transportation. Speaking of which, this skateboard might just be the real deal and not a toy I would imagine it to be. Fortunately, if you are looking to buy it, there’s no assembly required. It comes assembled and ready to skate.
IKEA Spänst was launched since May 2018 and last checked, in September 2018 by Braille Skateboard, the skateboards are still available. However, it is not clear if it is clear if it still available at the time of this post because, since the collection, including the said skateboard, is not available online. They are only available in stores, except for IKEA Jacksonville and IKEA Grand Prairie. If it is still available, you are looking at $89.99 a pop.
