Petrolheads bitten by the nostalgia bug are going to dig what Mercedes-Benz has to offer. Last month, the pointed star marque dropped the G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s, which oozes with retro vibes and yet not lacking of modern amenities and features.
Only 460 units of this throwback beast are being made, which basically guarantees instant collector status. Available as either a G 450 d or G 500, it brings back three classic paint jobs from the original W460 series—agave green, cream, and Colorado beige—paired with delightfully orange turn signals, matte black bumpers, and a badge that looks like it time-traveled straight from 1983.
Inside, it’s business in the front and party in the fabric. The seats sport dove grey cloth inserts and the “STRONGER THAN THE 1980s” lettering stares proudly from the grab handle. It also gets a “Schöckl Proved” badge—because every true G-Wagen must survive the Schöckl mountain test track—and a “1 of 460” plaque to remind your passengers that this isn’t just some regular grocery hauler.
Other highlights include a Burmester 3D sound system, sliding glass sunroof, all-terrain tires, mud flaps, and an optional roof rack if you really want to lean into the adventure aesthetic. The 2.01-inch (51 mm) touchscreen? Nah, that’s another watch—this one’s all about physical presence and vintage charm.
The G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s starts at €160,055 (around US$171,000), which is a lot—but you’re not just buying a car. You’re buying boxy, diesel-scented history.
Anyhoo, better act fast before all 460 are gone and you’re left cosplaying the ’80s in a crossover.
