The concept of an elongated canopy umbrella with an offset shaft isn’t exactly mainstream, but it’s been around—lurking quietly, waiting for its moment. What no one saw coming was its dramatic entrance into the Gundam universe. Nope, it never showed up in the anime (not even in a filler episode). But somehow, this awkwardly genius umbrella design has found its calling—as the Mobile Suit Gundam Shield Umbrella. Because when it rains, it pours beam sabers.

These umbrellas will not block projectiles, melee weapons, and explosions—or in the case of the Beam Umbrella (which is not an actual energy-based contraption, obviously), it will not deflect beam attacks, and absorb damage. They will, however, shield you from the rain, and perhaps become part of your cosplay gear for your daily commute.
Whether you’re repping Amuro’s Gundam, Char’s red Zaku, or the delightfully obscure Zeon Earth forces, you can now shield yourself in style. There’s even a version inspired by SEED FREEDOM’s Strike Freedom Gundam Type II with a see-through “beam shield” look—perfect for those who like to pretend they’re deflecting drizzle with raw energy.
At 92 cm wide (36.2 inches) and 126 cm long (49.6 inches), these are no dainty foldables. They sling over your shoulder and cover you down to the hips. They’re made with polyester fabric and fiberglass ribs and weigh just 360 g (0.79 lbs), which is probably lighter than the keys to a Zaku. Other spec-sheet details include eight internal ribs ranging from 40 to 70 cm (15.7 to 27.6 inches), and a matching carry case.
Available now from Premium Bandai for 6,930 yen (~44 USD), the Mobile Suit Gundam Shield Umbrella is a licensed excuse to live out your mecha pilot fantasy—at least until the next bus shows up.
