Nonnanest SightAware contactless infrared baby wellness monitor with parent display
SightAware uses a contactless infrared sensor array to measure your baby’s skin temperature from across the crib while keeping all data local—no wearables, no apps, no WiFi, and no subscriptions required.

A baby monitor is really just a CCTV for keeping an eye on your baby. But there are a handful that do more than monitoring. Some entertain the baby, and then there are some that include baby wellness features, like monitoring breathing, and now, even taking temperatures. And mind you, we are not talking about room temperatures.

This device, called SightAware, from Charleston, South Carolina startup Nonnanest, is the first contactless infrared skin-temperature baby wellness monitor. The setup consists of two parts: the SightAware nursery camera and the SightAware 5-inch HD parent display.

The former looks like a regular camera at a glance, disguised as an adorable bot. But the “eyes” are actually the camera and the proprietary infrared sensor array that is able to read surface skin temperature from across the crib without the need for WiFi. There’s no wearable sensor, nor does it require an app. Best of all, it is subscription-free.

The infrared sensor can read the skin temperature of your little one from up to four feet away. For those who don’t know, accurate temperature reading from several feet away is not new. It has been around since 2015. But I believe that it is only now that it has been implemented in a monitor like this.

In addition to letting parents see the baby, it also shows real-time skin temperature and room temperature, so you are always in the know. The video and skin temperature data are transmitted via Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum, or FHSS, which is a secure wireless protocol that hops across 80+ frequency channels per second. The data stays local between the nursery camera and the display.

Not only does it not require WiFi, but it also does not need to be connected to the internet, and there are no external servers involved. Moreover, it does not even require you to create an account to start using it.

God damn it. Why does this feel like the perfect gadget?

In this day and age, where companies are like wolves drooling over your personal information, Nonnanest is a refreshing change. Other features include customizable comfort thresholds with gentle audible alerts, 355-degree pan, 60-degree tilt, two-way audio, lullabies, and, of course, infrared night vision—all standard.

The Nonnanest SightAware Baby Wellness Monitor is set to drop this Spring at US$329, with no hidden fees. No subs, no recurring costs whatsoever.
