I surely did not see this coming. Last week, when I opened up YouTube, I was greeted by a teaser trailer called Lightyear with a vaguely familiar face in the thumbnail. It was Buzz Lightyear! Yes. That Buzz Lightyear, the Space Ranger from the Toy Story franchise.
However, this time, dear old Buzz is, aesthetically speaking, more polished which made him less “toy-like” and for good reason. The Buzz is not the Buzz we know from the Toy Story movies; he is the hero who “inspired” the toy as we know it.
That’s right, people, a plastic toy can have a backstory without sounding ridiculous. Clever. Very clever, Disney. So, no. This origin story is not about how a toy was designed, or about the plastic molding machine and factory line that made it. And also no, Tim Allen is not the voice of this Buzz. Chris Evans is.
TBH, we thought 2019’s Toy Story is the last of it… but it was not to be. But we should have known. It is Disney that we are talking about here and milking more from a franchise with a huge fanbase by creating origin stories and spinoffs is what the outfit does best (just look at what Disney did with Star Wars after it purchase it).
Lightyear sci-fi, action-adventure animated movie will be released on June 17, 2022. Meanwhile, here’s the teaser trailer:
