Retro Games Ltd. The Spectrum Personal Computer

Before you throw up in disbelief—or in joy that the classic ZX Spectrum has returned, you have to understand that this is not the personal computer you have known. This “reborn” Spectrum is really more of a retro video game console, made possible by Retro Games Ltd., in collaboration with video game developer and publisher PLAION.

Retro Games Ltd. The Spectrum Personal Computer

The Spectrum is a modern recreation of the 1982 original that is scheduled to launch across Europe on November 22, 2024. Featuring 48 pre-installed games, including beloved titles like Manic Miner, The Great Escape, and The Hobbit, this device blends nostalgia with updated functionality. The system outputs in 720p HD via HDMI for a crisp display on modern TVs and includes four USB ports for gamepads or joysticks.

In keeping with the retro experience, The Spectrum features a replica of the original rubber keyboard, complete with fully functioning keys. Additional upgrades include a rewind feature, four save-game slots per title, and a CRT filter option to simulate old-school TV visuals. The inclusion of BASIC programming is a nod to the ZX Spectrum’s legacy, encouraging creativity much like the original system did.

The Spectrum emulates all ZX Spectrum models from 16k to 128k and is compatible with both new and old controllers, offering a seamless experience for retro gaming fans. Pre-orders are now open at UK retailers such as Smyths Toys, ShopTo, and Amazon. The Spectrum will be available for £89.99 (€99.99).
