following its success with Galaxy Tab, Samsung has announced a quartet of smartphones taking on the Galaxy namesake and along with it, a brand new branding strategy. the quartet of Galaxy handset includes Galaxy W, Galaxy M Pro, Galaxy Y and Galaxy Y Pro – all running on Android 2.3 aka Gingerbread OS. at one breath, four phones are being announced which makes me wonder if there is indeed the need for so many variation? Samsung even has a ‘glossary’ that explains what each alphabet means, speaking of which, i shall spare you the torture of reading through a lengthy Samsung Galaxy dictionary. read along for a little more detail on each of these Galaxy smartphones.

kicking off the quartet is the Galaxy W smartphone, a 3.7-inch touchscreen phone powered by a 1.4 GHz processor. it features support for fast HSDPA 14.4 Mbps connectivity and Samsung’s Game, Social and Music Hubs for a one-stop solutions for gaming, socializing and entertainment needs. next in line is the Galaxy M Pro, which is a phone geared towards “young and sociable professionals” and features a built-in QWERTY keyboard that takes up half of the phone real estate. additional interface includes touchscreen and an optical trackpad. since the M Pro is taking on the professional route, it will also include a suite of enterprise solutions that include Exchange Active Sync, Sybase Afaria, CISCO Mobile and as well as CISCO WebEx.

the third and the fourth handsets are the Galaxy Y and Y Pro. the “Y” in this case are entry-level or strategic models for younger consumers. some of the features of the Galaxy Y include 832 MHz processor, Samsung’s Social Hub, Samsung’s TouchWiz User Interface and SWYPE for speedy typing. as for the Pro variant, it comes equipped with a QWERTY keyboard, “enhanced social and professional features”, and ThinkFree mobile office which enables a variety of Office documents such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel and PDF, to be edited from the handset. aside from the physical keyboard, touchscreen is also offer as an alternative interface.

well, there you have it. the quartet of Galaxy smartphones from Samsung. whether they are good, remains to be seen. i can’t help but to think such successive launch of new smartphones, is a desperate move to ‘cover up the holes’ that marketeers perceive to exist in the market. it might be good for consumers who are still looking for options but on the other hand, it might be cannibalizing its own market in process or worst, create unnecessary confusion to consumer. honestly speaking, that’s one major reason why i fall back to Apple’s iPhone cos’ i don’t want to spend time comparing handsets or worrying that it might have shorter than expected life cycle as new models are launching every other month.
