The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 has just been announced. At a glance, it looked exactly like its predecessor and it probably is, right down to the dimensions. OK. Not true. It appears to be exactly the same but is it not exactly so. There are some differences, if ever so slightly. It is a tad thinner when folded at 15.1 mm (15.4 mm on Z Flip4) – thanks in part to the hinge but more on that in a bit.
The cameras on the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 appeared to be identical to the Z Flip4 too but I could be wrong. The main camera system comprises a 12 MP ultra-wide camera (f/2.2, 1.12 µm, 123° FoV and a 12 MP wide-angle camera (Dual Pixel AF, OIS, f/1.8, 1.8 µm, 83° FoV). Meanwhile, the front gets a 10 MP selfie camera with f/2.2 (I believe the Flip4 was f/2.4), 1.22 µm, and an 85° FoV.
So what has changed? Not a lot as far as I can see and read but the most obvious, visually, would be the cover screen (now called Flex Window because, why not?) which is now a whopping 3.4-inch Super AMOLED 60 Hz display with a resolution of 720 x 748 pixels.
The main display appears to be the same 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X with a 120 Hz adaptive refresh rate and boasts a 2,640 x 1,080 resolution.
Another key difference from its predecessor is the chip which is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy. That brings us to the RAM which is still 8 GB but the base storage is now 256 GB. The final key difference is the newly designed Flex Hinge which features a dual rail structure, which Samsung said helps to diffuse external impacts.
The new hinge is said to have fewer moving parts and hence simpler, and more compact. The new hinge allows the new Flip to be able to fold completely flat (finally!).
With the new Z Flip, Samsung is also marketing a new camcorder mode where it lets you record video while holding the phone like a camcorder and as you do so, your subject(s) see what you see on the cover screen, no, wait, the Flex Window.
The final key difference from the previous gen has 15 device components that are made from recycled materials like recycled PET, recycled PC, recycled PA, recycled glass, and recycled aluminum.
It is outfitted with the same 3,700 mAh dual battery that supports the same 25 W wired charging, the same wireless charging and reverse wireless charging.
The new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 is available for pre-order in select markets starting today, with general availability starting on August 11, 2023.
