SKYPHONE by Thuraya Smartphone with Satellite Connectivity

From the satellite communication specialist that brought you the first Android satellite smartphone, is a new satellite smartphone that looks deceptively like a regular smartphone. Called the SKYPHONE by Thuraya (that’s Thuraya Telecommunications Company, btw), it is billed as the first-ever universal smartphone with cellular and satellite connectivity.

The device, which was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress 2024 in Barcelona, is a dual-mode device that ensures constant connection across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia, ideal for city dwellers, travelers, adventurers, and maritime enthusiasts.

Running on Android 14 with a Qualcomm Octa-core Kryo processor, the SKYPHONE offers robust performance, an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, a 6.67” FHD (2,400 x 1,080 pixel) AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass, and a retractable satellite antenna (which explains the thickness of the device).

It features three rear and a 50 MP front camera for high-resolution photos, two nano-SIM card slots for terrestrial and satellite connections, and compatibility with 370+ Thuraya Roaming Partners in over 150 countries.

Availability starts September 2024. It will be available with a contract which means you do not need to worry about finding a separate satellite plan. Pricing has not been disclosed, though.
