Sweet Little Rain Mellower Coffee

The phrase “make it rain” usually means tossing money like confetti in the West, especially in the U.S., where the phrase was coined. But it has a different meaning at Mellower Coffee, a specialty café chain founded in Shanghai. Though, it’s not literal “make it rain.” One of its signature drinks is called “Sweet Little Rain,” where it literally rains sweets on your drink—which, in this case, would be a cup of Americano.

The beverage has an intricate setup featuring a puff of cotton candy suspended over a hot cuppa of Americano. As the steam from the piping hot drink rises, the hot air melts the cotton candy. This makes it “rain” sweetness into the cuppa, and thus, you get a sugared caffeinated drink. If you are a coffee sweet, this is for you. As for me, I don’t drink coffee with sugar, so this is one thing I’ll just stay on the side and admire.

Anyhoo, the coffee chain has recently introduced this head-turning, attention-grabbing drink at some of its locations in Singapore—or so we heard. It looks like this thing first appeared 5-6 years ago. And by now, it’s not the only sugar-dripping coffee. There’s the afternoon tea with a cotton candy cloud in Brazil, and it appears that Qu Qu Cafe in India and Vietnam’s The Cloud also have similar beverages.
