Blimp-type UAV Sucks In Air To Propel Itself Forward

Today’s drones, regardless of their applications, are not quite groundbreaking as long as they are limited by battery life (and therefore, range) and if they are still propelled by rotors. It is like a person, dressed up in different costumes or people doing different jobs. Basically, they change in form, but not in substance. The Phoenix UAV you see here, however, is very different. Giant-ass HAV Airlander 10 Made Heavy Landing, But Everyone’s Fine

Some sites called it a crash and to be honest, that’s a little click bait-ish and much exaggerated. We see it as a heavy landing, which incidentally, I personally experienced a day ago when the regular Boeing aircraft I was on made an unusually heavy thump onto the runway. I grasped, but everything was fine. My immediate thought was, “God, they should get the landing checked if anything’s hurt in process.” Anyways, as it turned out, the much anticipated revolution in aviation, Airlander 10’s test flight was anything but smooth. First it was the delay due to undisclosed technical issue and then, on the second test flight on the 24th, it “experienced a heavy landing.” Continue reading Giant-ass HAV Airlander 10 Made Heavy Landing, But Everyone’s Fine

The World’s Longest Aircraft (And Biggest Butt) Took To The Skies

Nearly ten days after it emerged from its hanger in Cardington Airfield in Bedfordshire, England, the world’s longest aircraft, Airlander 10, has finally taken to the skies for the very first time on Wednesday, August 17, 2016. The flight marks another milestone for this ambitious aircraft which, when realized, will see a plethora of applications, including live event coverage, expedition and research, and data and surveillance – thanks to its ability to stay aloft for extended period of time, and also, the ability land on unprepared surfaces. Furthermore, being a slow flyer also makes it ideal for turning it into a luxury air liner for leisure air cruise. Continue reading The World’s Longest Aircraft (And Biggest Butt) Took To The Skies

Airlander Emerged From Hanger And It Literally Is A Big-Ass Aircraft

It has been more than two years since we last reported about the Airlander 10, an airship/aircraft hybrid developed by UK-based Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV). Believe it or not, all those years since, it has not emerged from the hanger where it was being put together and subsequently, underwent a series of in-hanger tests. Today however, it has finally emerged from the comfort of the hanger and for the first time, the public had a glimpse of this giant of the sky. Airlander 10 is now out of the hanger at Cardington Airfield and it will be go through a series of ground systems tests followed by its maiden test flight – with blessing from EASA and the UK CAA, of course. The World’s Longest Aircraft: HAV Airlander

last week was a significant week for the aviation industry because the the world’s longest aircraft, the Airlander by UK-based Hybrid Air Vehicles finally took to the sky. measuring some 300 feet (91 meters) long, the Airlander is around 60 feet longer then the current biggest airliners, the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8, and is nearly 30 feet longer than the cargo-carrying Antonov An-225, which is the current longest aircraft. the Airlander might look like an airship, in fact it does have some DNA of an airship in the form of the inert helium-filled balloon above the 46 meters long flight deck, which contributes to 60% of the aircraft lifts, while the rest of the hull fill in the rest of the lift. we didn’t get to feature the remote controlled blimps that were quite an attraction during the last toy show but here’s one that you can make yourself while taking it a notch up. meet Ollie, the autonomous and ambient robot that has an Arduino for its brain, microphone for its ears and cute, undersized wings for maneuvering. Ollie is very much alive. he floats around, reacting excitedly by flapping his wings when you speaks or claps. Continue reading meet Ollie, the autonomous robotic blimp with flapping wings
