Folks, this is the R18 LMP1, Audi’s contender for this year’s FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and Le Mans 24 Hours, which Audi billed as the marque’s strongest race car to date. Audi goes back to the drawing board in designing the Audi R18, resulting in a vehicle that “has nothing in common with its predecessors.” A new, more radical aerodynamics concept that features a new safety cell, a revised V6 TDI engine and for the first time, a hybrid system that is battery-operated, replacing the flywheel energy storage system used from 2012 to 2015. Nissan ZEOD RC Le Mans Prototype

Nissan has taken the wrap of the Nissan ZEOD RC Le Mans Prototype, an electric racer that will be enrolling into the 2014 24 hours of Le Mans under the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO, the organizing entity behind Le Mans)’s “Garage 56” category, a special category reserves for vehicles with new and innovative technology. btw, the ZEOD is not a typo – the ZEOD here stands for Zero Emission On Demand, which is a hybrid drivetrain with driver-selectable power source (between electric power and petrol-powered drive). the ZEOD RC is still evolving and from now till it sits on the grid this time, next year, there are still much to be done, including exploring multiple electric drivetrain technologies. but as for now, the recently unveiled ZEOD RC employs the same lithium battery technology used in the road-going Nissan Leaf, and will be the fastest electric racing car in the world with a top speed in excess of 300 km/h (186 mph). race cars hasn’t changed much over last two decades or so. the performance may be up but they remain largely the same within their individual category. however, Nissan has set its sight to change this with its Nissan DeltaWing experimental race car – a car that might look like it was made for land speed record with its narrow long front end. of course, it isn’t. powered by a race prep 1.6-Liter DIG-T (Direct Injection Gasoline – Turbocharged), the oddly sleek looking (by today’s standard) DeltaWing is expected to make some 300 horsepower. it will make its maiden race at this year’s Le Mans 24 hours race, though it will not be classified. it will be used to showcase the automaker’s pioneering technology that will point to a potential direction of motorsport of the future and also its technologies will eventually trickle down to future Nissan road car product range.
