Transformers toy collectors are living in an exciting time. Why? For the first time, you don’t have to spend ridiculous money hunting down a piece of toy history—if you could even find one. The new Transformers Spotlight Optimus Prime set lets you do just that. This trio of Deluxe Scale figures recreates the stages of toy development, from gray model to prototype to final production figure, giving fans a piece of the creative process itself.
Possibly because of Hasbro’s growing understanding that fans are grown-ass people—not just kids—the toymaker has released a highly collectible 3-figure set based on the Studio Series Deluxe Class Transformers Devastation Optimus Prime figure. The set includes a gray model, the very first model from design plans and CAD drawings; the prototype, a model rendered in molded colors with imperfections corrected; and finally, the final production example.
The set boasts over 160 intricate deco ops, and each 4.5-inch-tall (11.5 cm) figure comes supplied with its own set of 3 accessories iconic to the Autobot leader, including the Matrix of Leadership, Energon axe, and blaster. Obviously, the gray model and the prototype are not the actual gray model or prototype from production, but that does not take away from the collectible value of this set.
Anyhoo, sweetening the deal is a display-worthy packaging highlighting the additional steps of the design and development process. Very, very cool. This may be the definitive collectible for any Transformers fan to, you know, geek out.
The Transformers Spotlight Optimus Prime will be available starting June 01, 2026, for US$84.99. Not going to lie—it’s not cheap, but god damn it, a gray model and a prototype? And what? A cel-shaded production model that’s more cel-shaded than the original Devastation Optimus Prime figure? Man, that’s pretty hard to resist.
